Welcome...

Oaksey is a friendly village with a great community spirit which everyone is anxious to preserve in the future. We are a fortunate village with our own church, shop/post office, pub, village hall and a thriving Primary school. We have playing fields in the centre of the village and a 9-hole golf course and leisure park at the edge. Country walks and footpaths give ample opportunity for relaxation whilst, a few miles distant, is the Cotswold Water Park, the centre for many types of aquatic activity, wild life conservation and fishing. there are also various social , leisure and fund raising activities in the village providing opportunities for residents to meet and enjoy each others company.

Parish Council
And for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second in the year two thousand and twelve, the village of Oaksey has organised…….da da-da da da da daaah ……………..nothing? (Not strictly true since the School, of course, are already advanced in planning a children’s street party type lunch on the Friday, which will have poignant memories, I suspect, of the Coronation, Silver Jubilees of the past etc - but I think we may be a little behind the game!)

Village Hall News
At the end of last year Ruby Blazier, our Bookings Secretary and Treasurer, let the Hall Committee know that she felt unable to continue. The village owes her - and her husband Paul who did the cleaning of the Hall - a debt of gratitude for their commitment and hard work on our behalf.

Mobile Libraries
Do you love reading?  The Mobile Library service has been running in Wiltshire for many years and is appreciated by all who use it – and its importance as a meeting place for neighbours is recognised too.  From children’s picture books to large print, audiobooks to DVDs, there is something there for everyone and if it isn’t in stock at this visit, they will bring it next visit.  It was, therefore, with concern that I heard that there is to be a review of the service as “reviews” often mean “cutbacks”, particularly in our current financial climate!  However, Wiltshire Council recognises the importance of the service and have protected the funding for it.  The review is to maximise the usage of the mobile service and ensure that it is being delivered to those areas with most need.  They will therefore be looking at the usage in the areas currently covered. For current stopping points they need at least 4 regular users to make the stop worthwhile.  Also, if there are other locations where a library stop would be beneficial and could fulfil the ‘4 regular user criteria’ then the Council would like to know, so either contact Wiltshire Council or call me and I will happily forward your thoughts.  Of course, for those who are unable to access the Mobile Library, there is a Home Library service which operates throughout the County – call me for more details.

Police News
We hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and New Year. The priority for the team up till Christmas was safer driving which focused on speeding, drink driving, wearing seat belts and use of mobile phones. We have agreed that this will be carried over for the next few months, taking us to the end of March. Speed checks were carried out in Charlton, Crudwell and Minety. Overall the results were surprising in that there was not much speeding. Offending drivers were also given breath tests; thankfully, these were all below the threshold.
